In exactly two years, Team Spirit of Adelaide will be on the start line for the inaugural Ocean Globe Race. The OGR2023 celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the first Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race and will be a retro race, circumnavigating the world in the style of 1973.
From left to right in this photo, crew members John Worby and Lucy Frost and Onshore Team Manager Nicky Miller and First Mate Mike Miller were pleased to attend the first UK Press conference announcing our entrant into this exciting retro race sailing around the world.
The crew met up with race organiser Don McIntyre, sailing legend Sir Chay Blyth, Barry Pickthall, sailor, journalist and author who was there back in 1973. They also met Peter Waring, who was speaking on behalf of the International Association of Cape Horners – we are looking forward to becoming members! The conference was attended by many like-minded competitors, and we got the chance to take a look around S/V Maiden, owned by another legendary sailor, Tracy Edwards.
Skipper Campbell Mackie and crew Katie Sarah watched on the live feed with envy from covid bound Adelaide but not to worry, the team will be together soon enough for an initial training sail and are looking forward to that day immensely.
The race has 3 classes and we are entered into the Adventure class. The five of us have established an owner’s collective purchasing S/V Outlaw, a Baltic 55 built in 1984. She took part in the 4th edition of the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race under the name Equity & Law and finished second in her class. We have a competitive vessel with a proud Whitbread heritage and a tough act to follow, but not unsurmountable!
The five founding partners have provided the critical mass to proceed with the entry and purchase of a vessel. Four have significant ocean racing experience having participated in the Clipper Round the World Race. The other is a highly accomplished mountaineer and expedition leader. But we need a total complement of 8 to 9, and so we are seeking like-minded people who have the personal qualities and commitment to complete our line-up and complement our esprit de corps. If you think this is you, please go to https://spirit-of-adelaide.com/application/ to register your interest.
